Gift Day next week

Next week is our 'Gift Day' when we are asking all of our regular members to contribute to the forthcoming church hall project.

This work will involve completely replacing the hall floor - it has been there for over 70 years and has now reached a point where it is starting to degrade badly. At the same time we are going to replace the front door of the Hall. Again this is the original - and the weather has caused it to wear and rot. Although we'll be doing the work 'in house', the materials and other associated costs will amount to about £4000.

Will you consider making a contribution to the costs of this project via our Gift Day? Envelopes have been given to everyone, but if you lost yours simply put the cheque (made payable to St Cuthberts Wrose) or cash in a clearly marked envelope. Please don't put it in the plate or in the regular giving envelopes. We'd also be grateful if you would indicate that we may reclaim the tax on your gift via the Gift aid scheme, and there are slips available at church for this purpose.

Thanks for your support - and we'll keep you posted with progress in due course.

Easter Day

Which came first... Jesus or the Egg? That's the question that we are asking as we prepare for our Easter Day services this year at St Cuthberts.

We've been out and delivered more than 2000 invitations to the people of Wrose - so a special welcome if you received an invitation and typed in the web address that was on there!

We have two great services to celebrate Easter this year.

At 9.30 am we have our Festival Eucharist of Easter, when we shall bless the Paschal Candle for the year, sing rousing hymns of the resurrection, and hear the time-honoured Easter story in words, prayers and liturgy. The preacher will the Vicar.

Then at 11.00 am there is a distinct change of mood when we have our All Age Easter Celebration  - we'll sing some lively Easter songs and join in a range of family-based activities and stories. Our highly-popular puppets will be on hand, and there will be free Easter eggs for all children who come

Easter is a great time to come along to Church - you are warmloy welcome to join us at St Cuthberts, the Anglican church for the people of Wrose.

Oh, and in case you are wondering - the answer to the question at the start of this post is 'Jesus'. That's why they called him Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last...

An Hour at the Cross

This year we are doubling up on Good Friday - two options for worship around the cross will be offered at St Cuthberts on Friday of Holy Week.

The 'Hour at the Cross' is a lovely time of reflecting on the events of the last hours of Jesus' life.

Words, images, music, prayer and silence are combined in a service which lasts for one hour, but the time flies by and it seems a lot shorter!

Join us at either 2.00 pm or 7.00 pm.

The two services will be the same, although there will additionally be live worship led by our music group in the evening service.

Where there is vision....

Believe it or not there’s a town in Arizona called ‘Nothing’. I use the word 'town' pretty loosely. It has a population of 4. All that's there is a gas station, a shop and a flat back lorry that sells lumps of rock. Being about 40 miles from next nearest town it is literally ‘Nothing by name, nothing by nature’

In the middle of the town is this plaque. Notice the second sentence. It really caught my eye - it could almost be the mantra of many churches.‘Without vision the people perish’ says the writer of the book of Proverbs. It's true. We need to have a vision of what we are trying to do - otherwise the danger is that we'll end up like the town of Nothing, where nothing much ever happens...

But there's an equal and opposite danger. And that's the idea that we need to spent forever finding, honing and shaping our vision. We are always 'waiting on God'.Soemday we'll get around to doing something - but not today, because we are 'waiting for confirmation' that what we think is God's plan really is. Now don't get wrong, it's imperative to wait for God's leading - but I think that God wants us to 'get into the game', to take a step of faith. And it's as we take those steps, that His will becomes clear.

The bible is full of examples of people who took steps of faith, sometimes in the most extreme and pressured of situations, and found that God was already ahead of them. There's a cracking example in Joshua chapter 3. God tells Joshua to get the people to go and stand in the water (vs.3). Notice that they don't get to wait on the edge of the river until God stops the flow of the water! You can just imagine the priests saying 'God wants us to stand where...?' But it was only once the priests got wet that God starts doing a miracle, and the Israelites are able to cross on dry land.

This passage acts as a jolt for anyone who thinks that we have to be constantly waiting around, sitting on our hands, waiting for God to give us vision and tell us what to do next. I don't think it was any accident, either, that God makes the priests - as religious leaders of the community of Israel - to take a step of faith. And what more of a step of faith than to go and get soaking wet!

Of course there’s a place for being still, for listening, for waiting on God. But we can just wait for the game to come to us - he wants us in the game. The question then becomes - what steps of obedience and faith should we take?

I want to suggest four - and they fit very neatly with four categories that were talked about on the recent 'Leading Your Church Into Growth' Conference at Sneaton. Sometimes they are referred to as the 4 P’s.

PRAYER
Naturally prayer is a vital cog in any growing and envisioned church. You’d sort of expect me to say that - but it is actually true! We find it sooooo hard, so difficult, we feel awkward, we know we should be better. Here are a couple of practical things - firstly we have our monthlyPrayer Meeting this evening. We have a good number of folks who come along regularly (its always at 6 pm on the 1st Sunday of each month) - but it would be great to see a few more people 'getting their feet wet'. Then in June we're going to have a 4 week teaching series on 'Prayer' when we can grapple together with the subject. As well as teaching on Prayer, there'll be loads of practical ideas and suggestions that we can put into practice...

PRESENCE
By ‘presence’ we mean basically letting people know that we are here. Unfortunately, we have a pretty low-level of ‘natural’ presence at St Cuthberts. We have no spire, no fancy building, no landmark. In fact lots of people drive past us every day without even realising that we even are a Church! So, its an uphill job - but its something that we need to work hard to overcome. 'Wrose Connect' is a project that we're going to be hearing a lot more about in coming months - it is our way of saying 'Hey Wrose, here we are'! In the short term, we are going to be doing some leafletting of parish this week (Tuesday April 7th) to let people know about our Easter Services. Come and join us.

PERSUASION
This is a tricky one - because we fear straying from persuasion into coercion. But it need not be so.

It is simply giving people the chance to ask the questions they need to and want to ask. It's not pressurized sales tactics - just a way for people who often have a very sketchy idea of Christianity find out more. Practically all growing churches have ‘basics courses’ or ‘enquirers courses’. We are going to start one after Easter - and I’m going to lead it. Watch out for details...

PROCLAMATION
Again, the hackles can rise - we think of people standing on a box preaching. We think of those guys who stand on Darley Street and shout at passers-by. Nobody wants to get involved in proclamation if thats what its going to mean! But its not that. It’s about sharing our faith, about believing that we actually have a great message to share.

Here are a couple of challenges. Firstly, I've taken up thew challenge from our Bishop and booked a Confirmation (in October). All we need now are some candidates! Have we got the faith to believe that God will bring in candidates over thecoming months? Second, I did a bit of work on the figures ans discovered that we're running at an average of 92 adults in Church for the first 3 months of 2009. Have we got the faith to believe that we can average 100 people by end of the year?

We need ALL of the 4 'P's' - Prayer, Presence, Persuasion and Proclamation - so that we can become a truly envisioned and visionary Church here in Wrose...

Palm Sunday

Our journey towards Jerusalem - and the Cross - arrives at Palm Sunday next week, with our celebration of those historic and amazing events as Jesus entered the Holy City.

Our first service of the day is at 9.30 am and is a traditional service of Palm Sunday Communion. We'll be singing seasonal hymns and hearing the well loved story of the first Sunday - plus we'll be blessing the palms as we take them out to our homes.

The second service of the morning is our usual 11.00 The Gathering - a time of worship and celebration, combined with inspiring preaching of God's word.

Don't forget that, being the first Sunday of the month, we have our Church Prayer Meeting - an hour of prayer in the Church from 6.00 pm. All Welcome.

Cleaning Day

This might seem like an odd announcement to put on the website of a go ahead church - but you know what they say 'cleanliness is next to godliness'. Come along and hel pwith a church spring clean on Saturday April 4th any time from 10.00 am

There'll be jobs inside and outside - and age and experience are no barrier. Remember that Jesus said that he came to serve, so let's serve Him together next Saturday.

Leading our church into growth

This week I'm going to Sneaton Castle for a four day clergy course called 'Leading your Church into Growth'. You can read a bit more about the course and the background to it in this weeks post over on our blog.

For the next two Sundays I'm going to be picking up this theme at The Gathering (11.00 each week) and talking about ways in which God can help our Church to grow. I don't really know yet what I'm going to be saying - because I'm going to be reflecting what I'll be learning this week! But, I'm expecting that it will be stimulating and challenging... for us all!

All Age Worship returns...

After a relatively succesful Christingle Service in December, we have scheduled four Sundays throughout 2009 when there will be All Age Worship at St Cuthberts. The first of these Sundays comes along on Sunday March 1st, at 11.00 am.

Our very special guest on this occasion will be Julie Wilkinson, a story teller from the Zephaniah Trust who works extensively in local schools with well known local musician John Froud. Julie will be telling stories and leading interactive activities around the theme of 'Creation'.

Also there will be puppet ministry, creative prayer, liturgy and music. It will be a service for all ages, but something that children can participate in and enjoy! Please join us for this attempt to re-boot and re-energise our all age worship at Church - and if you know any families or chilren, then please encourage them to come along!

Ash Wednesday

Over the years, Ash Wednesday has grown into a significant and important celebration in the annual church calendar that regularly draws a healthy congregation

This year, Ash Wednesday falls on February 25th, and we have two services to mark the day. We have our usual morning Communion at 9.30 am which will be a penitential communion, and be extended to include the 'Transformed by Christ' DVD input that is part of our ongoing small group series. This service will, as usual, be followed by coffee.

Then, in the evening we have an Ash Wednesday Service which will follow the same liturgy as the morning service. What will be a bit different is that we are welcoming Revd Helen Lealman, a Non-Stipendiary curate at St James Bolton as guest speaker. She will be reflecting on the passage in Philippians that we are looking at in our small group series. There will also be the DVD clip, and worship for the season.

Join us for Ash Wednesday at St Cuthberts this year.

"Here come the girls" 1 : Hannah

This morning was veerrrryyyy cold (the air temp was -6C at 10.00 am) as we started our February series on radical Old Testament women with a look at Hannah. By way of an experiment, here is a SlideShare presentation that combines the Keynote presentation with bullet points from the sermon notes that I used Let me know via the comments whether this is something that is worth doing. It takes about 20 minutes for me to adapt the materials and produce this Slideshare - I'm happy to keep doing this after sermons so long as people find it helpful and useful...
